A good time to carry out these inspections is during tyre changes, when you can get a good look at the entire wheel and check for cracks and corrosion, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Older wheels, especially, need more frequent checks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the wheel is loose, the bolt\/stud holes can become elongated (egg-shaped).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the wheel nuts are loose, you may break studs and\/ or develop cracks at the stud holes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are some maintenance tips for looking after your wheel nuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d941471b3544d1c27ef146886c9d8379\">Maintaining Alcoa\u00ae\u00a0Wheel Nuts to Avoid Wheel Nut Hole Wear<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-big-retro-fit-nut-myth\"><strong>The Big Retro Fit Nut Myth<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The biggest myth about retrofit nuts is that they can be used to locate the wheel. Retrofit nuts are not wheel locators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s what to look for when using retrofit nuts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>1. Make sure the wheel has a stud hole large enough to accommodate the nut shank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>2. Make sure the wheel is located on the hub. Remember: Retrofit nuts are not wheel locators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>3. If using a longer shanked retrofit nut, make sure it doesn\u2019t bottom out on the end of the stud thus affecting clamping force. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"720\" height=\"720\" src=\"https:\/\/www.alcoawheels.com\/australia\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/07\/wheel-nuts-teal.png?w=720\" alt=\"wheel-nuts-teal\" class=\"wp-image-2126\" style=\"width:410px;height:410px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.alcoawheels.com\/australia\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/07\/wheel-nuts-teal.png 720w, https:\/\/www.alcoawheels.com\/australia\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/07\/wheel-nuts-teal.png?resize=150,150 150w, https:\/\/www.alcoawheels.com\/australia\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/07\/wheel-nuts-teal.png?resize=300,300 300w, https:\/\/www.alcoawheels.com\/australia\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/07\/wheel-nuts-teal.png?resize=600,600 600w, https:\/\/www.alcoawheels.com\/australia\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2023\/07\/wheel-nuts-teal.png?resize=100,100 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll need a retrofit nut (special sleeved nut) when you\u2019re fitting alloy truck wheels to a truck that previously had steel wheels fitted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is due to the overall thickness of the mounting surface of the wheel being bigger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The shank or sleeve of Alcoa<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>&nbsp;retrofit nuts extend right into the mounting holes of the wheel and connects with the shorter stud length so that it takes up the extra stud length to affect the correct clamping force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alcoa wheels have a 32mm stud hole diameter to accommodate the retro fit nuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NOTE: For the correct torque setting, please refer to your truck or trailer manufacturer\u2019s operator manual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-looking-after-stud-holes\"><strong>Looking After Stud Holes<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend regular checking of stud holes for &nbsp;enlargement and elongation &nbsp;so that you catch damage in time and avoid costly wheel-offs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Often a clue that wheel nuts are loose, is that you\u2019ll see dirt streaks or rust radiating from stud holes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-to-look-for-to-identify-loose-wheel-nuts\"><strong>WHAT TO LOOK FOR TO IDENTIFY LOOSE WHEEL NUTS:<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for wallowed out or elongated ball seats on stud&nbsp;piloted wheels, which are signs your wheels are running loose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On hub piloted wheels, look for elongated stud holes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you spot damaged ball seat contact areas (the stud hole looks egg-shaped instead of perfectly round), remove the wheel from service and scrap it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for visible thread marks on the inside of the stud holes, which are also evidence that your wheels have loose wheel nuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-keeping-wheel-nuts-tight\"><strong>Keeping Wheel Nuts Tight<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend you make sure wheel nuts stay tight by checking the torque, studs and nuts at regular service intervals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A good practice is to check nuts and studs at the minimum at every tyre change to ensure they are in serviceable working condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If nuts require frequent tightening or studs break often, we recommend reviewing your hardware and mounting practices to ensure the correct procedures and setting guidelines are being followed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h5 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-s-and-don-ts\"><strong>DO\u2019S AND DON\u2019TS<\/strong><\/h5>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-alcoa-wheels-lists alcoa-wheels-lists-block\"><div class=\"list-wrapper\"><ol style=\"list-style-type:decimal\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-alcoa-wheels-list-items list-item-wrapper\"><li class=\"list-item \"><span><strong>DO<\/strong>\u00a0Tighten wheel nuts to their specified torque. This is extremely important.<\/span><\/li><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-alcoa-wheels-list-items list-item-wrapper\"><li class=\"list-item \"><span><strong>DON\u2019T<\/strong>\u00a0Under tighten wheel nuts, as this results in loose wheels which can damage wheels, studs and hubs, and can result in wheel loss.<\/span><\/li><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-alcoa-wheels-list-items list-item-wrapper\"><li class=\"list-item \"><span><strong>DON\u2019T<\/strong>\u00a0Overtighten wheel nuts, as this can damage studs, nuts and wheels and will also result in loose wheels.<\/span><\/li><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-alcoa-wheels-list-items list-item-wrapper\"><li class=\"list-item \"><span><strong>DO<\/strong>\u00a0Make sure you are calibrating all torque wrenches, impact wrenches and any other tools for tightening wheel nuts to ensure the proper torque is applied.<\/span><\/li><\/div>\n<\/ol><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For all the information you need to threading when putting wheel nuts on hub piloted wheels, is to apply two drops of oil to the point between the nut and the integrated washer and two drops of motor oil to the first two threads of the tip of each stud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Alcoa Wheels recommend the following wheel nuts for use with Alcoa<sup>\u00ae<\/sup>&nbsp;alloy truck rims:&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Did you know that chrome-plated wheel nuts with chrome plating on the surfaces that contact the wheel can cause reduced and inconsistent wheel clamping?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This can cause wheels to loosen and disengage from your heavy duty equipment and create a serious safety hazard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend using only Alcoa Wheels wheel nuts
