The Environmental Benefits of Alcoa Dura-Bright Wheels for Australian Truck Fleet Owners

In today’s rapidly evolving trucking industry, sustainability is more than just a buzzword – it’s a responsibility. As environmental concerns grow, so too does the demand for eco-friendly solutions that not only reduce carbon footprints but also enhance operational efficiency. One such innovation is the Alcoa Dura-Bright wheel, a revolutionary product designed with patented technology to meet the rigorous demands of modern truck fleet operations. For Australian truck fleet owners, adopting Dura-Bright wheels offers a range of environmental benefits that align with both ecological and economic goals.

Water Conservation: A Key the Environmental Benefits of Alcoa Dura-Bright Wheels

Water scarcity is a pressing issue in many parts of Australia, making water conservation an essential consideration for all industries.

Alcoa Dura-Bright wheels are engineered to reduce water usage significantly. Traditional wheels require extensive cleaning, often involving copious amounts of water. In contrast, Dura-Bright wheels utilise a patented surface treatment that drastically cuts down on water needed for maintenance.

Efficient Cleaning Process: On average, cleaning and polishing traditional wheels takes about 25 minutes per wheel. With Dura-Bright wheels, this time is slashed to just 2 minutes. This remarkable reduction translates to thousands of litres of water saved over a fleet’s lifespan. For truck fleet owners, this means a substantial decrease in water usage, contributing to broader environmental conservation efforts.

Labour Savings: Enhancing Operational Efficiency

In addition to water savings, Dura-Bright wheels’ reduced cleaning time offers significant labour savings. Time is money, and every minute spent on wheel maintenance is a minute taken away from productive operations. Dura-Bright wheels save thousands of hours of labour annually by cutting down the cleaning time from 25 minutes to a mere 2 minutes per wheel.

Economic and Environmental Impact: This efficiency not only boosts the bottom line by reducing labour costs but also diminishes the environmental impact associated with labour-intensive cleaning processes. Fewer hours spent on maintenance mean lower energy consumption and reduced wear and tear on cleaning equipment, further underscoring the environmental benefits of adopting Dura-Bright wheels.

Reduced Use of Harsh Chemicals

Traditional wheel cleaning often involves harsh chemicals to remove the dirt and grime. While effective, these chemicals pose significant environmental hazards. They can contaminate water supplies, harm wildlife, and contribute to soil degradation. Alcoa Dura-Bright wheels, however, require only mild detergents for cleaning. See our Dura-Bright Wheel wash available Now.

Safer Cleaning Agents: The ability to use mild detergents reduces the reliance on environmentally damaging chemicals. This safeguards local ecosystems and ensures compliance with increasingly stringent environmental regulations. For truck fleet owners, this means a cleaner, greener operation with fewer regulatory hurdles.

Long-Term Durability and Sustainability

The Environmental Benefits of Alcoa Dura-Bright Wheels for Australian Truck Fleet Owners

The durability of Alcoa Dura-Bright wheels further enhances their environmental credentials. These wheels are designed to withstand the harsh conditions of Australian roads, resist corrosion, and maintain their appearance over the long term. This longevity reduces the need for frequent replacements, thereby minimising waste, and resource consumption.

Sustainable Investment: Investing in durable products like Dura-Bright wheels aligns with sustainability principles. It ensures that resources are utilized efficiently, and waste generation is minimised. For truck fleet owners, this means a lower total cost of ownership and a reduced environmental footprint.

For Australian truck fleet owners, the environmental benefits of Alcoa Dura-Bright wheels are clear. By significantly reducing water usage, cutting down on cleaning time, eliminating the need for harsh chemicals, and offering long-term durability, these wheels represent a smart investment in sustainability. Adopting Dura-Bright wheels is a proactive step towards greener fleet management, demonstrating a commitment to environmental stewardship while also reaping economic rewards.

In an industry where efficiency and sustainability are increasingly intertwined, Alcoa Dura-Bright wheels provide a practical solution that addresses both concerns. By making the switch, truck fleet owners can drive their operations towards a more sustainable future, contributing positively to the environment while enhancing operational effectiveness.

3 Important Ways Alcoa Wheels Is Helping Fleets Reach Their Zero Emissions Goals

In Australia about 20 per cent of carbon emissions stem from transport, including passenger transport, and these emissions are of course growing with increased demand for freight services.

The demand for freight is at an all-time high, with further growth to 35 per cent on 2018 volumes anticipated.

It goes without saying that with this increased demand for freight services, means in increase in CO2 emissions.

According to the Australian Trucking Association (ATA), from the 1970s to the late 2000s, the trucking industry made productivity gains of more than 600 per cent with B-double heavy vehicles being widely used.

ATA Transport and Infrastructure adviser Sam Marks says those gains have had a major impact on reducing emissions.

“Without the decades of productivity improvement, such as the B-double, an additional 150,000 articulated trucks would have been needed in addition to the 70,000 that were registered for use in 2007,” ATA Transport and Infrastructure adviser Sam Marks told The Australian.

“A B-double reduces the emissions impact by about 18 per cent, while a B-triple can reduce it by 31 per cent. You can move more freight per truck, there are less truck trips to get the job done,” added Mr Marks.

The gains have now stalled, and companies are looking to find the next wave of improvements to keep lowering fuel emissions.

“Alcoa wheels support sustainable transportation by helping trucks and trailers to be greener,” says Ross Simmons, Managing Director of Howmet Wheel Systems Australia (distributor of Alcoa Wheels). “Helping operators cut down on fuel use and carbon emissions is one of our biggest priorities, and we invest heavily in leading in the latest innovations to engineer lighter and lighter wheels.”

Because Carbon emissions from transport contribute about 27 per cent of the global CO2 output, transport and logistics companies are turning more and more to electrification to meet their sustainability responsibilities driven by freight demands.

ELECTRIC AND HYDROGEN-CELL POWERED VEHICLES ARE IN

Electric vehicles are playing a major role in the Australian Government’s plan to achieve zero emissions by 2050, with hydrogen-cell powered vehicles following.

According to Tony Fairweather, founder and CEO at SEA Electric Australia commercial vehicles powered by their 100 per cent electric SEA-Drive technology reduced Australian CO2 emissions by about 4000 tonnes in the decade to 2021.

“Once fleets start trialing electric commercial delivery vehicles, they – and their drivers – never want to return to an ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicle,” Tony told The Australian.

“The linear acceleration and deceleration, zero noise and zero diesel fumes are some of many reasons drivers love an electric option.”

In late 2020 Volvo Trucks announced its intention for all Volvo Trucks to be fossil fuel free by 2040.

Each Volvo FL truck has been estimated to save about 34,000 tonnes of CO2 per 50,000km, taking into account vehicle manufacturing, use and end of life.

Volvo Group Australia’s vice president Emerging Technologies and Business Development Paul Illmer says the process to transition to electric vehicles is achievable for heavy vehicle fleets. Their trucks can travel up to about 200km.

Volvo vehicles come standard on Alcoa wheels.

Hydrogen-cell powered vehicles are set to play a role in the zero emissions drive, with a vehicle introduced by Hyzon Motors touted as Australia’s first hydrogen-cell heavy truck.

Volvo and Daimler are also pursuing plans to cut the costs of hydrogen fuel cells to make the zero-emissions technology commercially viable.

FUNDING FOR FLEETS

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has made $127.9 million available to:

  • light vehicle fleet operators to integrate battery electric vehicles into their fleet, and
  • heavy fleet operators to integrate battery electric and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles into their fleet.

“Assisting fleet users to move to zero emissions vehicles means getting more zero emission cars and trucks on the road sooner, driving the road transport sector toward a net zero future,” said ARENA chief executive officer Darren Miller.

You can find out if you are eligible and to learn more about the Future Fuels initiative.

THE 3 WAYS ALCOA WHEELS IS CONTRIBUTING TO HELPING FLEETS ATTAIN THEIR SUSTAINABILITY GOALS

Most of the prime movers in the market already come standard with Alcoa wheels, because they are known for their premium features and benefits, such as their light weight and durability, along with their lowered maintenance and fuel efficiency attributes.

It’s all very well having an electric prime mover that’s kicking zero emissions goals, but if the trailing equipment is weighty it will chew through battery power and reduce the kilometres you can get out of your battery.

Australia’s leading fleets and OEMs choose Alcoa wheels for their trailing equipment because:

#1 ALCOA WHEELS ARE THE LIGHTEST AND STRONGEST FORGED ALUMINIUM WHEELS IN THE HEAVY-DUTY TRUCKING INDUSTRY

The 22.5″ x 8.25″ Alcoa Ultra ONE® wheel weighs just 18kg.

The Patented MagnaForce® alloy, which is only available on Alcoa wheels, was introduced to the market in 2013 and replaced the 6061 alloy which had been in use since the forged aluminium wheel was produced by Alcoa Wheels 45 prior.

MagnaForce® alloy is on average 17 percent stronger than the industry standard 6061 alloy when used in similar applications.

The increase in alloy strength allows for a reduction in the overall weight of the wheel, without compromising its strength and durability.

The Alcoa Ultra ONE® wheel can carry the same load of 3,360kg as the previous 20.36kg 22.5″ x 8.25″ Ultra ONE® Wheel, while being almost 2.5kg lighter!

Lighter wheels mean that fleets and owner-operators benefit from offsetting the extra weight of the battery, as well as getting the most out of the distance an electric truck can travel on that battery’s power.

“Reducing the number of trucks needed to haul the same quantities of freight has a substantial impact on sustainability,” says Ross Simmons, Managing Director of Howmet Wheel Systems, distributor of Alcoa Wheels in Australia.

Trucks that have to travel less haulage runs because they can carry more means less trucks on the road, which in turn means cleaner air and healthier citizens (who are customers, employees, family members).

#2 ALCOA WHEELS ARE 100% RECYCLABLE

Aluminium can be recycled forever.

Recycling an Alcoa® Wheel at the end of its useful life will generate a piece of metal with exactly the same properties as the metal used to manufacture the recycled wheel. Once the new product reaches the end of its useful life, the same process can be performed again and again.

In the recycling process, almost all of the quantity of the material is preserved – and this process can be repeated almost infinitely.

Aluminium recycling also saves huge economic and environmental costs compared with the creation of virgin metal. Each ton of aluminium recycled saves one square meter of land use and 24 barrels of crude oil equivalent of energy.

It saves more than 15 tons of fresh or sea water use, eliminates more than 9 tons of CO2 equivalent of greenhouse gas emissions, and avoids 2.5 tons of solid waste and hundreds of kilograms of other air and water-borne emissions and effluents.

corbets-fleet-dura-bright

#3 ALCOA DURA-BRIGHT® WHEELS CREATE LESS WATER WASTE AND REQUIRE LESS HARSH CHEMICALS TO BE PUT BACK INTO THE ENVIRONMENT

Available across the entire Alcoa Wheels range, Alcoa Dura-Bright® wheels are infused with a proprietary surface treatment that penetrates the surface of the aluminium to form one composite that becomes an integral part of the wheel so cracking, corrosion and filiform can’t get underneath as is seen with acrylic and other coatings.

With the ability to be cleaned in a Ph environment 2-12, they stay shiny with regular truck cleaning products and even just soap and water – even after hundreds of washes and thousands of kilometres.

Less harsh chemicals and less water needed is much kinder to the environment (Dura-Bright wheels have been known to cut wash time down from 20 mins to just 2 mins per wheel!).

“Dura-Bright® wheels clean with a simple soap and water wash, and not only do they take less time to clean than standard brushed aluminium wheels, they don’t need to be polished, so there are less chemicals going into the environment and less water used,” says Michael Nichols, National Sales Manager for Alcoa Wheels.

Alcoa Dura-Bright® is available across most of the Alcoa wheel range, which means the premium benefits they are known for are not compromised:

  • their light weight (increased payload, better fuel efficiency),
  • their unmatched strength (proprietary MagnaForce® alloy is exclusive to Alcoa wheels and is 17% stronger than any other alloy in the industry),
  • their improved heat dissipation results in extended tyre and brake life.

Custom Denning Electric Bus on Alcoa® Wheels Approved by TfNSW Procurement Panel

Custom Denning (whom many know by their previous name, Custom Bus) are driving public transport with their Element electric buses with a mission to build innovative high-quality buses made by Australians and using advanced manufacturing techniques to continually improve their processes.

The Custom Denning Element Battery Electric Bus (BEB) has been recently fully approved on the Transport for (TfNSW) procurement panel in the Zero Emission Bus category, as the NSW Government executes plans to transition the state’s fleet of 8,000 buses to zero emission technology.

Four prototypes of the Element BEB have been in service since November 2020, and initial orders have been placed with operators to enter service in the coming months.

“The Element BEB has been designed to replace standard diesel buses across Australia with as little as possible need for change to their operations,” says Grant Mascord, National Contracts Manager for Custom Denning.

“Electrical infrastructure may be required to be upgraded at the depots to enable the chargers to be installed.”

There are a number of features that make the Element BEB stand out from the rest:

BATTERIES BUILT TO SAVE ENERGY IN HARSH CONDITIONS

Solid-State Lithium Metal Polymer (LMP) batteries were fitted on the Element buses. This was done after extensive overseas trials were conducted on this type of battery.

The batteries feature a higher energy density per kilogram compared with standard lithium Ion batteries in use on other BEB’s. This allows for reduced weight of the overall bus.

This weight saving is transferred into better efficiency in operation of the bus and also allows for a potential higher load of passengers due to the overall weight of the bus being lighter.

White Custom Denning Element Electric Bus with green Zero Emissions powerplug logo on the side

The LMP batteries operate without the need for cooling systems, saving more weight. They also operate in a higher temperature window and this allows them to perform well in the harsher climates that are evident in Australia. This equates to a range on average in excess of 400km (~20 hours) on a full charge dependent on operation / application.

AUSTRALIAN MADE FROM START TO END

With Custom Denning building the bus from start to end, they were able to integrate the chassis and body into one complete structure and combine it with a stainless-steel frame to retain the strength required to accommodate the added weight of the roof mounted batteries.

The complete bus is built at the St Marys plant in NSW, creating local jobs.

White Custom Denning Element Electric Bus with australia

“Because we build the complete bus in NSW whilst complying with Australian made accreditation, Custom Denning may have the highest Australian content of any Electric bus currently in the country, making this truly Australia’s Electric Bus,” acknowledges Grant.

LIGHTWEIGHT

“What we have is a bus that gives the lowest weight while maintaining the capability of enduring a 25-year life that is expected of a city bus, and meeting all ADR requirements,” says Grant.

By specifying Alcoa forged aluminium wheels instead of steel wheels, the weight of the batteries is further offset to enable the Element BEB to have a ~70 passenger capacity in addition to its lightweight integral design.

Calculations show up to 79kg weight saving with Alcoa Wheels compared to heavier steel wheel weights with the same dimensions and load rates.

The lighter Alcoa wheels not only offset the added weight of the battery, but they help extend battery life and improve range. According to US bus manufacturer, Proterra, it has been shown that for every ~150lbs (68kg) reduced, one extra passenger can be added, for example.

Alternatively, with battery energy density of 160 kwh, ~3 miles (4.8km) of range could be added.

SUSTAINABLE

1. Cleaner Air

With the Custom Denning Element battery electric buses being zero emissions vehicles, they will be helping NSW transport sector by reducing harmful air pollution that diesel exhaust emissions are known for.

Because zero emission vehicles don’t produce any tailpipe exhaust, smog and acid rain caused by the toxins in gasoline and diesel-fuelled ones is significantly reduced.

Cleaner air means better health for the community as a whole, as asthma and other health issues aggravated by poor quality air can be reduced, which in turn lowers the demand on government health resources.

It’s not only air pollution that’s considered in sustainable practice and important to community health; noise is a serious factor, too.

2. Less Noise

According to the World Health Organization, sound levels less than 70 dB are not damaging to people, regardless of how long or consistent the exposure is, however if we are exposed for more than 8 hours to constant noise beyond 85 dB we could be putting our health at risk.

Zero emissions vehicles like the Custom Dunning Element play an important role in reducing environmental noise in inner cities, where there can be a cacophony of sounds at any given time – from building works, traffic, emergency response vehicles, for example.

3. Recyclability

The environmentally friendly solid-state batteries on the Elemental contain no solvents, cobalt or rare minerals and capable of being recycled.

Alcoa Wheels are 100% recyclable. Recycling an Alcoa® Wheel at the end of its useful life will generate a piece of metal with exactly the same properties as the metal used to manufacture the recycled wheel. In the recycling process, almost all of the quantity of the material is preserved – and this process can be repeated almost infinitely.

4. Water Saving and Less Harsh Chemicals Put into The Environment

“What ties in really well with the sustainability of Custom Denning’s zero-emissions buses is not only the recyclability of Alcoa Wheels, but the choice to specify Alcoa Dura-Bright® wheels,” says Michael Nichols, National Sales Manager for Howmet Wheel Systems, distributor of Alcoa Wheels in Australia.

“Dura-Bright® wheels clean with a simple soap and water wash, and not only do they take less time to clean than standard brushed aluminium wheels, they don’t need to be polished, so there are less chemicals going into the environment and less water used.”

The patented technology offered by the Dura-Bright® surface treatment allows the wheels to stand strong against dirt and road grime, while keeping their shine.

Alcoa Dura-Bright® wheel in a tyre with label facing outward

Alcoa Dura-Bright® is available across most of the Alcoa wheel range,  the premium Alcoa wheel benefits stay the same:

  • their light weight (increased payload, better fuel efficiency),
  • their unmatched strength (proprietary MagnaForce® alloy is exclusive to Alcoa wheels and is 17% stronger than any other alloy in the industry),
  • their improved heat dissipation results in extended tyre and brake life.

“Through local testing via the four prototype buses on the road since November 2020, we have been able to design and build a bus that meets the specifications required for operations in Australia, that suits the Australian conditions and that will benefit the transport sector for many years to come,” says Grant.

Take 20 minutes to listen to the Alcoa Wheels experts talk about how they broke into the bus (transit) market when it was all steel wheels, and how through listening to what their customers’ concerns were they were able to come up with the best solutions on the Behind the Wheels Podcast below.

6 Ways Alcoa® Wheels Contribute to Our Planet’s Sustainability

Switching one truck from steel wheels to forged aluminium wheels equals the carbon footprint of an average  4 person household.

The carbon footprint of the transport sector is one of the most common ways to measure the effect of the industry on the environment. An increase in greenhouse gas emissions, and therefore in carbon footprint, is believed to be the primary event associated with climate change that has led to global warming.

The trucking industry has been doing its part for the environment to lower emissions and improve the fuel efficiency of trucks on the road in recent years, and aluminium wheels are integral to the success of this undertaking.

Although the transport and agricultural sectors both contribute around a sixth of Australia’s net Green House Gas (GHG) emissions, worldwide the percentage of road transport CO2 emissions contributed by heavy duty vehicles is expected to reach 41% globally by 2030.

And despite Covid sending Australia’s carbon emissions plummeting in 2020 to the lowest levels in 30 years, it wasn’t long before they started to climb again with the easing back of lockdown restrictions.

c02-reduction

In 2012, Howmet Aerospace, manufacturer of Alcoa® Wheels, released the findings of a peer-reviewed life cycle assessment* (LCA) which concluded that Alcoa® forged aluminium wheels substantially cut the carbon footprint of commercial vehicles.

In North America, the study found that substituting 18 conventional steel truck wheels with Alcoa® aluminium wheels cut carbon emissions by 16.3 metric tons over the lifetime of the wheels.

In Europe, 13.3 metric tons of carbon emissions were cut by replacing 12 steel wheels with aluminium ones. It was concluded that the use of Alcoa® forged aluminium wheels over steel wheels could be viewed as an active and highly efficient investment into the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in the commercial vehicle sector.

Here are 6 ways aluminium wheels are helping lead the sustainability effort in the transport sector and helping the planet:

1. LIGHTWEIGHT: AN ALCOA WHEEL IS UP TO 51% LIGHTER THAN A STEEL WHEEL

Today, in 2021, the pressure is on even more with stricter regulations around reducing carbon emissions, and with new technologies adding weight to commercial vehicles, there is a call for lighter, stronger wheels to offset these costs while at the same time keeping payloads lucrative and maximising fuel efficiency.

By switching from steel to aluminium Alcoa® Wheels, OEMs and fleets can easily save up to 51% in weight, depending on the wheel size, allowing them to:

  • increase the vehicle’s payload
  • reduce operating costs
  • boost your profitability, all while doing their bit for the planet!

Adding over 200kg of additional payload per average haul with lighter wheels, plus reducing the fuel consumed per kg of cargo, increases the efficiency of the transport.

Given the lightweight properties of aluminium wheels, even the amount of energy required to transport the wheels to OEMs is significantly lower than steel, as illustrated here.

“Alcoa® Wheels support sustainable transportation by helping trucks and trailers to be greener,” says Ross Simmons, Managing Director of Howmet Wheel Systems Australia (distributor of Alcoa® Wheels). “Helping operators cut down on fuel use and carbon emissions is one of our biggest priorities, and we invest heavily in leading in the latest innovations to engineer lighter and lighter wheels”.

2. DURABILITY: HEAVY DUTY WITHOUT THE HEAVY

Aluminium wheels are tough enough to withstand both the rigors of the most challenging climatic conditions – from cold to wet to hot.

Alcoa® Wheels are forged from one solid block of aluminium. With an 8,000 tons press, the block is forged into a wheel shape. Once forged, the wheels are heat-treated to maximize overall mechanical strengths.

The Alcoa® Wheels forging process aligns the grain flow of aluminium with the shape of the wheel, even in the critical area where disc and rim meet. This process results in wheels with unrivalled forged strength that withstand the most severe tests to ensure highest standards and quality.

Howmet Wheel Systems, distributor of Alcoa® Wheels in Australia, are so confident in the durability and quality of Alcoa® wheels, they give a 5-year unlimited mileage warranty.

Fitting durable, long lasting wheels to your equipment, minimises the need to replace wheels and reduces your impact on the environment.

3. RESISTANCE FROM CORROSION: AN ALCOA DURA-BRIGHT® WHEEL IS 10 X MORE RESISTANT

What makes aluminium wheels so resistant to corrosion is that the metal spontaneously forms a thin but effective oxide layer that prevents further oxidation. Aluminium oxide is impermeable and, unlike the oxide layers on many other metals, it adheres strongly to the parent metal.

Alcoa® Wheels’ low maintenance surface treatment, Dura-Bright®, has been engineered to bond with the aluminium even more by penetrating the metal to form one composite 3 times more resistant to chemicals and 10 time more resistant to corrosion than ‘standalone’ aluminium.

Using less harsh chemicals to clean your wheels reduces your impact on the environment.

4. STRENGTH: THE STRONGEST WHEELS ON EARTH

Aluminium alloys are what makes aluminium one of the toughest metals on earth. Alcoa® Wheels are manufactured using a patented MagnaForce® Alloy which has strengthened the wheels by 17% over the industry standard 6061 alloy used for aluminium wheels worldwide.

The stronger the wheel, the more load it can bear. The Alcoa® Ultra ONE® Wheel, for example, weighs just 18kg and can carry the same load (3555kg) as its predecessor over ½ a kg heavier.

Increasing payload helps you reduce the number of trips it takes, therefore saving you in fuel and other consumables and thus saving the environment.

5. 100% RECYCLABLE

6. LONG LIFE: AN ALCOA® WHEEL LASTS FOR DECADES

Aluminium is especially durable in end-use and it lasts for decades. During its life as an Alcoa® Wheel, it has no energy or resource demands, nor does it release any particular environmental hazard.

In the case of commercial vehicles such as buses, medium and heavy trucks and truck trailers, the lifetime energy savings range from 150 to 1,048 MJ, or 1.0 – 7.2 gallons of crude oil equivalent, and lifetime greenhouse gas emission avoidance ranges from 10 to 76 kg CO2 equivalent. These findings have been largely supported by the results of other similar independent studies across the world.

The aluminium industry’s view of the sustainability of its material is that each piece of the metal ever made should be used, recycled, and reused for multiple generations and none should be landfilled or permanently destroyed.

The implications of this vision for the permanent existence of aluminium wheels are tremendous for our planet.

*Life cycle assessment (LCA) is the universally accepted method to comprehensively assess the environmental impact of a product. The findings of the Alcoa® Wheels LCA were based on the full life cycle of the wheels—from the raw materials, through the production, distribution, use, disposal, and recycling of the wheels.
